Setting Good Virtual Classroom Routines for Young Learners
Routines are important in any learning environment, especially for young learners. In the classroom, routines support student learning and build efficiency. The same is true with remote or virtual learning. It benefits students by letting them know what they can expect and what is expected of them. Routines also encourage students to learn greater responsibility and self-management. Simplifying routines is a wise thing to do.
SIS-PIK teachers help students succeed by setting up good virtual classroom routines that will help them feel at ease and familiar with their virtual classroom. They also help children know what is expected and when they are available for help by making a consistent weekly schedule. They make it visually easy to understand, with clear instructions and deadlines.
When we set routines for a virtual classroom, we aim for consistency and clarity. One helpful way to set expectations is by sharing daily and weekly to-do lists with our students. These can cover things like:
- What they will prepare for each class
- What tasks to complete for the day
- The type of content and materials needed
- How and when to submit work
Consistency is key, especially at the beginning of a school year or the start of online learning. Be sure that students do the same routines over and over so they can get used to them. At SIS-PIK, we regularly emphasise the importance of such routines to ensure that learning is maximised.
