SIS-PIK COMMUNITY UPDATES
No.3/2019-2020 – 2 August 2019

Introducing our teachers

Each week, we will introduce one of our teachers. This week, please meet Mr Shawn.

Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself to the SIS-PIK community. I currently teach Global Perspectives, Public Speaking and Debate and a preparatory extended essay course.  Additionally, I am the homeroom teacher of the newly formed Junior College Foundation class. My professional background is rooted in the humanities field and I have taught subjects such as history, geography, English, and international relations. I hold a BA in History degree from the University of California and an MA in Teaching from the University of Southern California. This is my second year in Indonesia but I have previously taught in California, North Carolina and South Korea. The 2019-2020 school year marks 10 fabulous years as a secondary teacher.

In my personal life, I enjoy exploring new cultures and trying new foods. My favorite Indonesian food (so far) has been Padang style cuisine. The variety of rich flavor is difficult to decline.  I am also an avid hiker and have already tackled some volcano hikes in Java and Sumatra. Each year I take a trip to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, USA for 7-10 treks (picture below).  I value the reflective seclusion majestic allure of trekking each year. Lastly, I enjoy spending time with my very large family during camping trips, reunions, karaoke and international vacations.  I hope to continue all of these hobbies within Indonesia in the years to come.

As a teacher, I truly value working with students and watching them mature into the best they can become. I aim to encourage students to critically think about the challenging world they see everyday.  I moved to Jakarta, Indonesia in July, 2018 because I am professionally seeking a school which promotes inclusion, demands rigor and supports student achievement. I’m happy to say that I have found all three here at SIS-PIK.  I am very grateful to belong to SIS-PIK community and look forward to working together towards greater heights.
