Creating Connections While Learning Mathematics

Mathematics is an interesting subject that has many applications in real life. Even though students often wonder how mathematics is relevant to them, the teachers at SIS-PIK use various strategies to help students make this connection. Here are some strategies that teachers use in class with the students.

Build Interest and Rapport
Teachers think about how they can effectively engage students and relate content to their interests. Often, they bring in various resources such as manipulatives, media and abstract stories to pique students’ interest.

Accessing Prior Learning
Learning needs to build upon previous learning and foundation concepts. Teachers revisit concepts which have already been taught and deepen the students’ knowledge by providing them with practical situations where these concepts can be applied.

Teaching Mathematics Vocabulary
Various keywords exist in mathematics which students will need to be familiar with. Teachers introduce these keywords to the students and help them bridge the gap in their understanding by creating strong word associations with the concepts tied to these keywords.

Personalised Learning
We introduce authentic situations and use the students’ experiences in real life to create relevance in what they are learning. Our classes are organised to help create more opportunities for students to discuss ideas in mathematics. Questions or mathematical problems are framed in a real-world context so that students are able to envision how mathematics is used in the world.

By learning in this way, students enjoy the learning of mathematics and look forward to using their creative and critical thinking skills in problem solving.
