Subject-Based Banding in Language Classes

We have students from diverse backgrounds in SIS-PIK. Some students are better at Bahasa Indonesia and Chinese while others need that extra support from their teachers. From this academic year, we want to provide our students with greater flexibility in the way they learn Chinese and Bahasa Indonesia. With subject-based banding, students are able to learn better at their own pace. This way, students can focus on the language they are strong in while they get help at a more comfortable pace in the other language. 

From P2 to P6, our students are placed in ability groups that match their proficiency in the Chinese language. Teachers then use suitable strategies to stretch or build up the understanding while learning. Subject-based banding is applied for P5 and P6 Bahasa Indonesia lessons.

This method ultimately gives students the opportunity to feel empowered and motivated towards learning as they are matched to a level suitable for them.
