Learning About Feelings in Kindergarten 1

Kindergarten 1 students explored different types of feelings in class this week. Like adults, young children need to develop strategies for managing their feelings to build good social-emotional skills. This sets a strong foundation for their personality and interpersonal skills as they grow. When children are more socially and emotionally aware, they can express their feelings effectively. Using these skills, children also learn to manage their emotions and lessen the probability of temper tantrums. As a result, the children will have an effortless time building rapport and making friends with others in the long run.

In this lesson, students had so much fun identifying different types of feelings. Basic feelings such as being happy, angry, sad, scared, surprised, and confused are introduced in the class. Children relate to their experiences going through these emotions and subsequently learn many ways to express their feelings.

Students sang a classic Preschool song, “If you are happy and you know it,” to add excitement. The teacher showed a picture of each feeling to get students to form word and pictorial associations as they sang the song together.

To expand and make learning about feelings more fun and interesting, students also played a “Feelings Charades” game. For this game, the teacher acted out the different types of emotions they have learnt. Our students had a ball of time guessing and identifying these feelings. They also made art and crafts on “Feelings”. Through a holistic learning approach, the students were able to create more learning experiences through these activities.
