CYBER SAFETY AT HOME

As technology develops, it can become very intimidating. It doesn’t have to be this way. Taking a few simple steps will help safeguard you, your family, and your information. There are a variety of ways to help filter or block inappropriate material:

  1. Filters – these help to block web sites that children should not be visiting. These are usually installed by a parent and run on the computer at all times. K9 Web Protection and Qustodio are popular apps.
  2. Trackers – some filters also offer this feature as well. This gives your child a bit more freedom, by allowing some approved content, such as social media, but informs you of your child’s activity. X3watch and Qustodio provide this service.
  3. Antivirus Software – while these may not block inappropriate content, they help prevent your computer from being infected with viruses that can show naughty material. Avast and AVG are popular free virus scanners.

Remember that these are only programs. They are not perfect. Remember that phones, tablets, smart TVs, and even video game consoles all have access to the internet. The best filter is an open relationship with your child. Have regular conversations with your children about what they are doing online, and encourage them to share any issues with you that come up. A conversation with a loving parent can be more powerful than the world’s best internet filter.
