Love for Bahasa Indonesia:
Learning to Appreciate Phrases and Proverbs with Pictures
Phrases and proverbs are one of the legacies of Indonesia’s ancestors. As the next generation of the nation, we must be able to preserve that heritage. In addition to enriching knowledge, we can also find a variety of advice from phrases and proverbs. For that, we need to teach our students.
In the past, we learned expressions and proverbs by rote. Our teacher would force us to memorise quite a lot of phrases or proverbs. As a result, now we are still able to memorise and use it in our everyday life. This way of learning is no longer relevant to this generation. As a way to solve the problem of learning about expressions and proverbs with content, we can use drawings as a method of study.
Learning phrases and proverbs by drawing makes students happy, think critically, and is easier to remember from the pictures they make. Thus, students will look for expressions or proverbs they can draw themselves. The Primary 6 students were assigned to draw one proverb and one phrase. They enjoyed the activity and tried to do it well. They were also enthusiastic to see the pictures made by their friends. Like the proverb “sekali dayung dua tiga pulau terlampaui” which means with one swoop of a paddle, it passes two to three islands. By only doing it as a whole, students were able to appreciate this form of language.
Below are the results that Primary 6 students have made.
