Helping Students Adjust to Preschool

Term 1 will always be an adjustment period for all preschoolers from Nursery 1 to Kindergarten 2. Some children can cope with the transition period but others have a separation anxiety issue exhibiting behaviours like crying or making excuses for not going to school. Here are some tips for preschoolers to be ready and brave to go to school:

  1. Talk to your Child
Assure them that school is fun and there are many engaging activities to be learned there. Reading storybooks about school is a way to prepare them about what school is all about.

  2. Set a Routine
Routine is important for children to know what is expected of them. Establish a sleeping time pattern every night so that they wake up on time in the morning and have enough time to eat their breakfast. Practise packing their bags the night before school.

  3. Don’t leave without saying goodbye
Assure them that you will fetch them during dismissal time and be punctual. This gives students a sense of time and a goal to look forward to as they go through the day.

  4. Engage with the Teacher
Teachers are there to help and support whatever your child’s need and guides parents as well. Approach and discuss with the teacher if you have concerns regarding your child’s adjustment in school.

The first few weeks are always hard but if you follow these simple tips, your child will be most likely to adjust to the idea of preschool in no time.
