SIS-PIK COMMUNITY SHOWCASE
June 2023

YSPB CARES FOR CANCER

On May 16 2023, the YSPB social organisation headed by Adnan Wellson Than (G11) and his team of 11 students, SISwa Cares, held an educational seminar entitled “Recognise Cancer in Children”. This seminar aimed to educate the parents of SIS-PIK students to be able to anticipate and recognise cancer as early as possible in children so that medical treatment can be carried out quickly and accurately. Our hope for this event is that by holding this educational seminar, it will be able to provide enough knowledge for parents of SIS-PIK students so that it can be useful in the future.

This seminar was also attended by children who have survived eye cancer – Abiyu, Raka Kurniawan, Raffa Afrizal Khalfani, Muhammad Fadli, and Azzahra Shaladudin. They are currently members of the Indonesian Children’s Sehati Foundation (or YSAI) organisation headed by Mr. Erwin Fauzi. The two specialist doctors, dr. Edi Setiawan Tehuteru, SpA (K), MHA and dr. Ian Suryadi Suteja, M.Med, Sc. SpA, from Tzu Chi Hospital, presented topics including identifying early signs of cancer and risk factors that cause cancer.

We would like to thank you for the unwavering support of all parents and students of SIS-PIK which allows us to continue our ongoing programmes, one of which is the SISwa Cares for Cancer programme. This year, thanks to the support of SIS-PIK parents and students, we were able to provide assistance again to Azzahra Shaladudin to get her old prosthetic eyes replaced. Through collaboration with the YSAI organisation, we have donated a total of IDR 15,000,000 to YSAI to be given to Azzahra and family to carry out a prosthetic eye replacement operation in Surabaya. Our next programme is to help a child named Raffa Afrizal Khalfani (6 years) to get a prosthetic eye. Raffa has just had surgery due to eye cancer and had lost his left eye. We hope that the support from parents and students will not stop so that we can maintain the programme for years to come.

We also want to inform that if parents of SIS-PIK students want to get seminar material on how to detect early symptoms of cancer and what risk factors can lead to cancer, they can buy a book written by dr. Edi Setiawan Tehuteru, SpA (K), MHA in the lobby of the High School building for IDR 100,000 per unit. All profits from the sale of the book will be fully allocated for SISwa Cares for Cancer programme.
