A MESSAGE FROM MS JEN

At SIS-PIK we are constanting thinking about how we can improve and move to Greater Heights. As part of our planning conversations recently, we’ve been talking and thinking about how we can give our students more “real-life” opportunities as part of their school experience. Things like community based service learning trips, learning journeys and experiential field trips, where students can get out into the world as young people to not only affect some positive change, but to gain some rich life experience as well. I hope these experiences will help uncover a passion or a spark to give added purpose, focus and meaning in their lives. These experiences will teach them some important life skills that simply cannot be taught in a traditional classroom environment. Our K1 and K2 students will visit Sea World next week, and I know the trip will be the highlight of their year. The touch pool, aquarium and shark feeding show will be a wonderful way our students to connect what they have learned about marine animals in the classroom. We hope the adventure of Sea World will spark curiosity and inspire deep learning. There are other ways to bring some “real life” experiences into school as well by inviting guest speakers and guest presenters. Last week we invited Dr Bammi; the Chief Examiner for TOK, this week we will have a Professor from Lycoming College to present to our students. We are trying to improve our current program, by thinking of more ways to connect student learning to real like and real world situations. We want to stretch learning beyond the walls of the classroom and the school. As always we thank you for your support and feedback for our programs.
