RESILIENCE WEEK

Resilience has often been defined as the ability to bounce back in times of adversity, and to develop in a positive way when faced with setbacks. For children, challenges and tough times include experiences like starting at a new school, moving house, or welcoming a new family member. They can also include serious experiences like being bullied, family breakdown, family illness or death. Children build resilience over time through experience and throughout this week, our Preschool friends have learnt different skills and practices that can help build their confidence in their ability to handle challenges and solve problems. For instance, on Thursday, Preschool students tried making sensory bottles and mandalas as a form of art therapy.

Some ways we can help to build children’s resilience are by building their self-compassion. Self-compassion helps your child deal with disappointment, failures or mistakes by being kind to themselves. Also, by encouraging them to have another go when things don’t work out for the first time they try something, and recognise when things are going well. You could say ‘Well done!’ or ‘Great job! I’m proud of you’.
