CREATIVITY ACTION SERVICE (CAS) AT SIS-PIK

Creativity Action Service (CAS) allows students to follow their passions. CAS gives students the opportunity to give back to their community, and enjoy learning through experience. It provides opportunities for self-determination and collaboration with others, fostering a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment from their work.

Each week we will feature one of our amazing JC students, and their latest CAS project/experiences. Please see Eugene’s story below.

“Playing the contrabass is tiring and not fun at first. However, as time goes on it does not feel any more like something you are forced to do just for creativity in the IB Diploma. Instead, it feels more like a hobby, and I can appreciate music (classical music and Indonesian music) more than I used to do.

The songs that we played are mostly Indonesian songs and classical music. I always think that traditional Indonesian songs cannot be played in an orchestra. However, it turned out that it makes a decent orchestra performance. This turns me around, changing me into a more open-minded person when it comes to touching the world of music.

Other than that, I learned to be more of a team player in this orchestra team. It is hard to imagine, that music links to teamwork. Playing as a team made me realise that everything could be done when there is teamwork and the ability to work together. Being a person that has trust issue before, it felt that all you have to do is to put your trust on other people. With that, it lets you feel more comfortable with your teammate/colleagues.

The skill that I learnt throughout my contrabass practice sessions is being able to do “sight reading” which is one of the skills that I am proud to have. Sight reading requires full concentration, as you are relying on your muscle memory to play the notes shown on the sheets. Sight reading has helped me when learning new songs that have new and unique patterns. With that, contrabass seems to be a fun instrument that I wish to explore more as I graduate from my school years. I hope that contrabass would be the musical instrument that I will keep in touch with as life goes on.”
