A Message from Ms Jen

As a school, this is a great question for us to ask; how can we create young people who can change the world? Dr Wagner in his book, Creating Innovators. The Making of Young People who will Change the World argues that our future leaders will be ones who solve social problems creatively, collaboratively, and sustainably. Creative innovators will be required to solve society’s biggest problems such as global climate change, world peace and pollution.

The question becomes, how can we create students who will be future leaders who can change the world? What would our school look like, if we want to create future leaders and creative innovators? You may have heard me talk about this before – this is something I believe that is very important, as it separates good schools, from great schools.

Where does it start? How can we inspire students with the desire to change the world, and how can we help them build the skills to make those changes happen? Dr Wagner explains that students must start with passion, the journey of innovative leadership begins with play, the activities young people find most fun, engaging, even whimsical, and then advances into an energizing and motivating passion, finally flowering as a deep and abiding purpose. The path to success lies in students creating their own personal journey of play to passion to purpose.

We are a school desperate to stretch beyond our academic program. We want to give our students opportunities to explore their passions beyond the classroom, we want our students to grow from play to passion to purpose. A few weeks ago, I had the unexpected pleasure of two wonderful Sec 1 students coming to meet me in my office. Jasmine Wu and Chloe Tamren are both passionate about the environment, and passionate about making SIS-PIK a better place. They came to see me because they wanted to carry on with the hard work started by our Green Movement team; Ethan JC2 and Patricia JC1. They are passionate about decreasing the amount of plastic we consume; a very noble cause. I am also so incredibly proud of our Primary prefects. They want to improve the Primary school environment by caring for plants along our walkways. I was so proud when I read the proposal from Bernice Robida in P6.

These are the seeds by which we can grow children who will change the world.
