SIS-PIK COMMUNITY SHOWCASE
October 2022

RESOURCEFULNESS WEEK

Schools in the twenty-first century must aid students in developing skills that enable them to adapt to a rapidly evolving world. Resourcefulness is a necessary skill. Because resourcefulness is so highly valued at SIS-PIK, it is an integral component of our culture mountain, which means that it is not only something we say but something we do on a daily basis.

Nurturing Resourcefulness in Primary – Focus on Purpose

We use the strategy of ‘Focus on Purpose’ to demonstrate to students what a learning goal is. In the process, students discover a learning goal is not simply an assignment or project. They learn that the tasks that make up the assignment fit together to help them achieve their learning goals. ‘Focus on Purpose’ allows our students to think broadly and deeply into different possibilities of problem-solving.

In the pictures shown, Primary students created an ocean creature profile. Each group searched for information and facts about their chosen species using resources from the library. Together, they made a poster giving information about an ocean creature.

Resourcefulness Showcase – High School

Students from grade 11A showcased their resourcefulness at the High School assembly on Monday, October 17th. The presentation began with a game in which participants had to guess the presentation’s theme by filling in blanks. The lesson followed with a video showcasing MacGyver’s most resourceful moments. The talk went on to define resourcefulness in a more general sense, explaining that it is the aptitude for figuring out how to do something, for finding answers to issues, and for coming up with innovative solutions to challenges. The students were also given some pointers on how to develop their resourcefulness. Following the presentation, high school students watched a video including advice from Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, on how to be resourceful.

We are hoping that by showing this presentation, SIS-PIK students will become more aware of the variety of learning resources available to them here. They merely need to develop their resourcefulness further. As life coach and business strategist Tony Robbins says: ‘It’s not about your resources; it’s about your resourcefulness.’
