SIS-PIK COMMUNITY SHOWCASE
 October 2024

GRADE 11&12 LEARNING JOURNEY

From 28 September to 2 October 2024, students from SIS-PIK embarked on a transformative Learning Journey in Manado, North Sulawesi, as part of their CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) project. This initiative allowed Grade 11 and 12 students to engage deeply with the local community, fostering connections and learning through service. During their time in Manado, students participated in community service projects at three local elementary schools: SDN 04 Tondano, SDN 08 Tondano, and SDN 02 Bunaken. The SIS-PIK students collaborated with local educators and community members to implement various educational activities, enriching the learning experiences of the younger students. These initiatives included tutoring sessions, creative arts projects, and sports events, all designed to promote learning in a fun and engaging manner. In addition, SIS-PIK students organised donation drives, providing essential supplies and resources to support the schools and their students.

A highlight of the journey was the cultural exchange that took place between SIS-PIK students and the local students. Through performances showcasing traditional songs and dances, both groups celebrated their unique cultures. This exchange not only provided entertainment but also strengthened the bonds between the students, fostering mutual respect and understanding. The students also had the opportunity to explore the rich Minahasa culture during a visit to Tomohon City. They toured local pottery workshops, learning about traditional pottery-making techniques that have been passed down through generations. This hands-on experience allowed them to appreciate the craftsmanship and cultural significance of the art form.

To culminate their Learning Journey, the students visited Bunaken Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s premier diving destinations. The group engaged in activities that highlighted the region’s stunning marine biodiversity. Snorkelling in crystal-clear waters, they explored vibrant coral reefs teeming with diverse marine life. This excursion not only showcased the natural beauty of Indonesia but also emphasised the importance of environmental conservation.

The SIS-PIK’s Learning Journey in Manado was a remarkable blend of service, culture, and adventure. Through their efforts at local schools, interactions with the community, and exploration of Minahasa culture and Bunaken’s natural beauty, students learned invaluable lessons about empathy, responsibility, and the power of community. This experience embodies the spirit of the CAS philosophy, demonstrating that education extends far beyond the classroom, shaping compassionate and engaged global citizens.
