CAS enables students to demonstrate how to plan and initiate a CAS experience. Here is Julian’s reflection on how he and his team were able to organise this year’s Halloween event.

On the 1st of November, our school celebrated an annual Halloween event with the Secondary and Junior College students. As a tradition, the current student council are tasked to plan and create this event. This is the first time I planned for an event of this scale that involved so many students of different ages.

Our first stage of planning is to think of a theme. We had many great and spooky ideas from the input of members of the student council. However, we could only choose one. We solved this by using a voting system. In the end we decided on the theme, “Monster Mansion”. After that, we need to think of a time most suited for everyone and determine the budget. Then, we prepared a proposal for the Head Teacher and the Deputy Head Teacher. Scheduled meetings with the heads of our school together with past student council members and our advisers soon ensued. They gave us many inspiring ideas and suggestions in order to make our event run smoothly and to ensure the students had fun.

After receiving the approval from the Head Teacher, we decided to proceed with our plans. We branched ourselves into sub-groups. I decided to be part of the group responsible for making the rundown and schedule. Some students also decided to take part in making decorations. The multipurpose hall have limited space, hence we needed to divide the area in which the class could sell equally. To ensure that there is no oversaturation of a certain good or game, we divided the stalls equally of which sold food and which sold games.

Organising a school event can be tedious, but every step of the way there are lessons to be learned and new skills developed. Focus on even the minor details is necessary. There is a sense of achievement in seeing that everyone enjoyed and had fun. We were also able to raise funds for the STUCO charity activities.
